What should you ask the contractor's references?
- Was the job schedule adhered to? Start time? Completion time?
- Were you given advance notice of items that needed to be selected?
- Was the contractor open to you purchasing materials or doing some of the work?
- Did the contractor appear to use time and materials efficiently?
- Was the contractor knowledgeable about alternative materials, designs, ways to reduce cost, etc.?
- Were you happy with the quality of workmanship?
- Were you comfortable with the specialty contractors (electrician, plumber, etc.)? Did they arrive on time? Were they neat, clean and courteous?
- Was the job site neat and clean at the end of the day?
- Did the contractor anticipate potential difficulties or challenges of the job?
- How did the contractor respond to changes, delays or problems?
- Were change orders (extras) accurately and fairly accounted for?
- Were the budgeted allowances adequate?
- Was the final price in line with the original estimate? Was the product a good value for the cost?
- Did the contractor maintain a good line of communication with you?
- Were problems that occurred during the job resolved easily?
- Were problems that occurred after the job followed up on quickly?
- Would you hire this contractor again? Why?
