What should you ask the contractor's references?

  • Was the job schedule adhered to? Start time? Completion time?
  • Were you given advance notice of items that needed to be selected?
  • Was the contractor open to you purchasing materials or doing some of the work?
  • Did the contractor appear to use time and materials efficiently?
  • Was the contractor knowledgeable about alternative materials, designs, ways to reduce cost, etc.?
  • Were you happy with the quality of workmanship?
  • Were you comfortable with the specialty contractors (electrician, plumber, etc.)? Did they arrive on time? Were they neat, clean and courteous?
  • Was the job site neat and clean at the end of the day?
  • Did the contractor anticipate potential difficulties or challenges of the job?
  • How did the contractor respond to changes, delays or problems?
  • Were change orders (extras) accurately and fairly accounted for?
  • Were the budgeted allowances adequate?
  • Was the final price in line with the original estimate? Was the product a good value for the cost?
  • Did the contractor maintain a good line of communication with you?
  • Were problems that occurred during the job resolved easily?
  • Were problems that occurred after the job followed up on quickly?
